It’s not rocket science: People living in earthquake zones for any length of time know one quake gives birth to more although the new tremors are normally called aftershocks. But you don’t call those tremors “aftershocks” when massive shaking begins again two-and-a-half weeks later. A recent regional study pinpointed 38 Indian Cities in High-Risk Seismic Zones, a commendable effort if steps can be taken to protect those cities. Especially sad was the identification of two cities at the highest risk for quakes–Guwahati and Srinagar.

The first earthquake hit Nepal on the 25th of April, killing what now totals more than 8000. Of course we have no way of knowing at this point how many of the dead in the newest quake are actually from the first. And so the Wings of Death continue to hover over the region from Nepal to India. In Nepal, at least another 37 lives have been claimed; in India, at least another 17, most of whom were in Bihar. More than 1100 were injured. As another tremor hits Nepal and North India, small towns could be more at risk than cities.

I wrote about the first quake in Part I, On the Wings of Death – Nepal and India, in April. Of course at the time, it wasn’t “Part I,” or rather no one knew yesterday’s quake (May 12) was going to come with such a fury again. I came into this analysis, wondering whether the two quakes–aside from the location and the close dating–it was possible to determine an astrological pattern to quakes. This may be the start of my own study on earthquake patterns. We’ll have to see. But right now, this is a focus I’m at least dabbling in pursuing.

In April, the Sun in fixed Taurus was making a tight conjunction (1°23, not partile, but tight) to the Midheaven, and the massive devastation sweeping through Nepal in particular showed in 4th house Saturn, 8th house Neptune and the Moon in the 12th. The aspects may not be important here in terms of the dynamics setting the stage for the massive number of deaths that occurred. The 4/8/12 complex of placements in the houses related to endings was there. Does it matter that Saturn was in an approaching square to Neptune at that time? Of course. We have the Peeling of Life’s Onion here, and certainly death does all of that.

But Saturn is also making an out-of-sign trine to the Moon since the Moon has that broad reach through its orb. I’m not one to look at an outer planet and decide that it requires a tighter orb. I think that’s going to be precluded by the terrestrial body (one of the luminaries or one of the social planets like Mercury and so on) and its larger orb.

Now I’m not going to explore more about the first quake since you can read about it in Part I. Instead, I’ll go to Part II, the second quake that took place on May 12:

You may be the kind of reader who looks at the difference in the number dead to determine whether an earthquake is significant. But how do we consider that when the 6.8 quake that hit northern Japan early this morning, the 13th of May, had no reports of deaths, injuries or even a pending tsunami? Honshu Island is the same area devastated by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011, raising concerns related to Fukushima’s nuclear reactors which are quite close to the site of this morning’s tremors. As a result, the area was experiencing some transportation delays between Fukushima and Sendai.

But a natural catastrophe–or even a major impact on a region by attack or some other kind of unexpected blow–should never be measured by the loss of life or property. Even one life lost in such events is one too many.
The second quake struck with nearly point-for-point fury and yet spared so many lives, thankfully. I know. Seems odd to think one could thank an earthquake for extending compassion in the midst of what could be perceived as rage, and yet it did. While 8th house Uranus in Mars-ruled Aries and 12th house Jupiter in Sun-ruled Leo were in place, Jupiter ruled an empty fourth house, reminding us that things could have been so much worse. But Saturn hadn’t really wandered enough from the first for it to be said to have not been in the fourth. In fact, it still was but on the third house side, conjunct the IC, perhaps taking just enough edge off that it wasn’t quite as powerful as it otherwise might have been.

Take note of the approaching opposition to transiting Mars conjunct the Midheaven (MC)–forming a T-square with a 4-minute partile from Saturn to the 6th house Moon as the arm and a 2°21-orb square between the Moon and Mars. At the same time, there’s another square we can’t forget, and that’s showing from Neptune on the 7th house cusp to Mercury still conjunct the MC from inside the 10th house. I’ve kept the Moon-Neptune conjunction separate this time because I wanted to point out the tighter mutable T-square in the Saturn to Mars square to the Moon. The Moon, however, also acts as a bridging square through its conjunction to Neptune in square to Saturn’s opposition to Mercury.

The Sun, by the time yesterday’s quake hit, was forming an undecaquartisextile–although barely–to Saturn. On the other hand, the Moon was making another “barely there” undecaquartisextile to Jupiter. I’m actually hesitant to go beyond 4° for an undecaquartisextile, but Venus makes yet one more almost there undecaquartisextile to Pluto with a 4°22 orb. So many almosts, no tight undecaquartisextile, but Jupiter is still sitting in quincunx to Pluto, cautioning the need to adjust.

Adjustment is one of those words that caution us to consider the ramifications of what we’re doing and what we need to do. With Pluto in the 5th house, you protect the children in times of danger because they are the future. The line brings to mind the couple in Arkansas who had shielded their 1-year-old daughter in the midst of a deadly tornado that tore their mobile home apart this past weekend. The couple gave their lives to save the life of their little girl. It is a clear story of a miracle, and surely we’ll see them again here, in the second quake news as well. That’s a life-sized example of a quincunx–you adjust, and you don’t take the easy way out if it isn’t just a quincunx but a yod. In this case, one could be extremely relieved to know there is no yod in place here since the chance for error increases with a yod in the midst of a crisis especially one like a natural disaster.

I was also curious to see how the chart from the Fukushima earthquake (March 11, 2011, 2:46:24 pm JST, Sendai, Japan. 140E53, 38N15) might play into the chart for the Nepal May quake. I wasn’t disappointed! The first and most evident aspect that popped up in the aspects between the second quake on the inside and the Fukushima quake outside is the conjunction to the May quake’s MC with the Moon from the Fukushima quake chart making a perfected conjunction to Mars in the Nepal May quake’s chart! Both sit at 00 Gemini 08!In addition, that conjunction triggers the tighter T-square in the Nepal chart–Saturn to Mars opposition in square to the Nepal May chart’s Moon!

Could the Vertex from the Nepal May quake chart at 7 Capricorn 18 possibly be a coincidence in its 1-minute partile conjunction to transiting Pluto from the Fukushima chart? And for that matter, what about the Nepal May quake Moon making a 25-minute partile conjunction to the Fukushima quake chart’s Chiron any more than the Fukushima chart’s Sun making a 26-minute partile conjunction to the Nepal May quake’s Chiron?

I can’t help but remember the devastation in both quakes, and here, we see Fukushima’s transiting Saturn in opposition to the Nepal May chart’s Uranus. Jupiter in the Fukushima chart makes a 54-minute conjunction to the May chart’s South Node, reminding me that the presence of chaos can be wrought with countless errors despite our best intentions.

Now in all fairness to the earthquake that took place this morning (the 13th) in Japan, there really is no point in making that chart comparison since the only real change in the chart by planetary configurations would have been in the Moon’s shift to 10 Pisces 51, conjunct Neptune. On the other hand, Neptune in the Fukushima earthquake chart falls at 29 Aquarius 12, tightly–but not partile–conjunct the Japan earthquake chart Midheaven today at 28 Aquarius 07.

But I have a few more events to explore with the Fukushima chart and that’s still to come. For now, the exploration offers perhaps more questions than answers about now. The correlations between the quakes, however, are simply fascinating!
